A stunning location situated in 34 acres of woodland, Rydal Hall offers creative inspirational views all year round with such beautiful landscape on the doorstep and also within the wonderful grounds themselves - perfect for our exciting mixed media residential art holiday in the heart of The Lake District!
The superb picturesque and dramatic local landscape close to Rydal Hall and in the grounds are both popular and ideal and with students who are inspired by the surroundings and find the experience of working outdoors really rewarding with added benefits in their work.
The art hoilday/course is aimed at artists with some experience who are looking to develop their style to a much deeper level utilising the experience of painting in both beautiful and stunning locations in the heart of The Lake District and who are looking to develop their work in much looser contemporary style.
I will help you to develop your art skills and your own personal approach to your subject to a more meaningful level beyond a direct copy of the landscape in lots of new and exciting ways using lots of different media - often in the same painting, even out doors!
Our studio is in a warm, well lit and spacious barn with its own facilities very close to historic Rydal Hall itself. Here we can relax, unwind and paint all day without being disturbed.
A really popular venue, rewarding painting experiences so autumn art holidays fill very quickly here in the Lake district with me. Early booking is therefore highly recommended to secure your place.
Sorry, course not for beginners as art techniques are too advanced. The art holiday is aimed at artists with some previous experience who are seeking a more expressive and looser contemporary approach with their work.

What you need to bring
Watercolour, gouache in your own favourite colours. Tube paints please. Pans are too small
Acrylic inks (any brand in your own favourite colours) - optional but recommended
Soft and hard pastels. Highly recommended Unison Colour and Royal Talens Rembrandt pastels. Cheeper brands are dusty and don't have good pigmentation so pro. brands are better than a bag of cheep ones
Fixative - any brand NOT HAIRSPRAY!
Canson Mi-Teintes 'Touch' 350gsm pastel paper or similar. NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH CANSON MI-TEINTES 170gsm paper which is too thin and has the wrong surface texture
Canson Moulin du Roy 300gsm (140LB) 'not' and 'hot pressed' watercolour paper highly recommended
Metal easel and drawing board (at a size you wish to work too)
A mixture of different size brushes - the larger the better.
Boots, raincoat, hat, gloves, thermals etc for outdoor painting
A flask for onsite hot drinks when painting away from the hall and in the grounds
A small lightweight stool if you prefer to sit when painting outdoors
A small backpack to fit everything in
Bulldog clips to secure your work to the board - especially usefull for outdoors
Lightweight water mixing pot, large watercolour palette
Mixing jars for studio painting days
Masking fluid and an old brush or two to apply it with
Notebook and camera
Your own favourite sketching media - highly recommended is Nitram Charcoal, graphite sticks, black and white acrylic inks etc
Kitchen roll and wet wipes
A very popular art course and with places limited to 18 students maximum early booking is highly recommended to avoid disappointment. Places fill quickly, despite the number!
Level of fitness needed - moderate to intermediate as there are inclines through wooded terrain to painting locations and some walking over distance involved to other outdoor painting locations - particularly to Rydal Water Lake close to Rydal Hall.
