JULY 2024 - Expressive mixed media at Higham Hall

Higham Hall, Cumbria
Sorry, now fully booked!

A very popular art week for the Summer in this unspoilt part of the Lake District National Park painting with fellow artists, with an enriched learning eperience using different drawing and painting media. Landscape subjects are the theme but not necessarily Lake District focussed painting subjects. We explore new painting subjects - your own to bring with you for courses at Higham Hall from now on!

Explore contemporary mixed media techniques using watercolour, gouache, acrylic inks and soft pastel. We may venture outdoors (weather permitting) painting and drawing in a dramatic Lakeland landscape setting but this course mainly focuses on a studio response to our source material (your own sketches, photographs, drawings and so on) with a semi abstract and expressive direction in your paintings.

Complete with an on-site well equipped and modern studio, Higham Hall offers a perfect base for your enjoyable painting holiday which explores both studio based painting and drawing sessions from reference material you want to paint (sketches, photographs and so on which you will bring with you), together with exhilarating en-plein air painting experiences too (weather permitting). This is a creatively rewarding art course for artists who have some previous strengths in drawing and painting who want to engage with subject much more in a freer and more expressive approach to subject that are personal to you.

The main emphasis of this art course is to express the subject but not be so literal. Expression and feeling for the subject are key and techniques and the ethos behind the course. Student willing to take risks with their work, to push their skills to greater levels and not be precious about their paintings will gain the greatest rewards.  If you want to keep doing what you have always done in the same old way - this course is NOT for you!

I will teach you how, by allowing your paintings to breathe and by working more intuitively, you will gain a more enriched creative advancement.

Acrylic Inks, Watercolour/Gouache, Soft Pastel and drawing media will be explored on different paper supports during the art course. A willingness to invest in your materials to thus invest in yourself are key to a successful outcome on this and every other course I teach.

You don't have to break the bank but 'beyond the basics' is  most certainly required in equipment for the course.

We will venture further afield from Higham Hall (taken to a painting location within the National Park by minibus) but, this depends on the weather of course. The aim  of the painting day outdoors is to be immersed in the landscape to enrich your painting experiences.

With one to one tuition throughout each day (studio or outdoors) you will build your confidence skills to tackling the 'big landscape' with rewarding outcomes.

A superb art course ideally suited to artists with a decent knowledge of drawing, knowledge of colour mixing and who want to step up to the next level, loosen up and become far more expressive in approach to their landscape and painting subjects.
