Robert's contemporary and expressive style achieves such success because his mixed media drawings and paintings rely on creating the right balance between spontaneity and control. By creatively working much freer (very often en plein air), when combining his intuitive choice of different media together, the results are strong, interesting and connect with his subject in unique and exciting ways.  

"I am not bound by rules and procedures but instead allow a more emotional approach to be the initial guide. Instead of deliberate compositional principles and rules, I follow my own path. During the creative process it is not uncommon for me to start the work almost entirely again - an exciting and almost cathartic process until the work eventually conveys a powerful clarity and directness with the energetic marks I make.”

More recently Robert's work has taken a more abstract direction. Within this new body of work he still maintains an underlying figurative structure, exciting textures with montage and layering combined. His skilled use of colour and tonal appreciation evoke a sense of timelessness and strength of character and presence within his contemporary work.
